Stages of Painting

1. High School Years

1964-66

I was very fortunate to have three excellent art teachers at high school, they introduced me to a lasting passion.

2. Early Acrylics

1993-94

I had never known of artist’s acrylic paints until late 1992

3. Acrylic Painting

1995-98

I entered several art shows during those years.

4. Retirement, Oils

I quickly found acrylics were not suitable for the outdoor painting I wanted to do, so I swapped to oils, but I hope to eventually return to acrylics for indoor painting.

Retirement has brought many challenges, and I haven’t been able to paint as much as I hoped.

5. Sketching Group

Although I joined the Friday Morning Outdoor Sketching Group in Adelaide early in retirement, other obligations stopped me attending for many years, but since late 2022 I have been able to attend regularly.

6. Sketchbooks

Like playing scales on a piano, I think regular sketching is very helpful to maintain skill levels.

  1. Hi John. Thanks for allowing me to view your art work. I really liked the Adelaide Botanic Gardens works and also Hindmarsh Square (where you have some lovely misty lighting going on), also the Pt Adelaide sketches.

Most of all I really loved the painting of your daughter Robyn. It was so natural and not at all posed looking.

    A lovely, well presented display.
